Umpire’s Corner

Jack Driven Over the Fender

If the Jack is driven over the BACK or SIDES of the fender by a player, the opposing skip shall have the following options:

• Claiming 3 shots and counting the end as played,

or

• Playing the end anew as in a dead end

Bowl Driven Over the Fender

If a bowl is delivered with such force as to pass or cause another bowl to pass over the BACK or SIDES of the fender, the opposing skip shall have the following options:

• Claiming three shots and counting end as played

or

• Counting the end as played and claiming the shots lying or

• Completing the end or

• Playing the end anew as in a dead end.

It should be noted that if both a bowl and jack are driven over the fender at the same time, the rule concerning the Jack over the fender shall take precedence.

Its often found that bowls laying flat on the mat that are struck with force tend to be more likely to pass over the fender rather than those resting on their running edge.
